Most of that rain seemed to fall in one brief but fierce downpour. What's happening: The Polk County High School Boosters Club will meet Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the Stearns Education Center. This will be an organizational meet ing and everyone is urged to attend. The Columbus Town Council meets Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the Town Hall. The Columbus Merchants Association will meet Thursday at 7 p.m. at McDonalds. All residents of Gillette Woods are invited to come out and meet their neighbors for the 14th annual meeting of the Gillette Woods Association Inc. Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at the Congregational Church. Tlie box office is open for the upcoming performance of Sarah, Connie Clark's one— woman portrayal of Sarah Bernhardt. The show takes the stage Friday at 8 p.m. at the Tryon Fine Arts Center. There will be a rummage sale Saturday, June 13 at Democrat Headquarters in Columbus. You (Continued On Back Page) TRYON, N.C. 28782 Board Hears Pleas For School Budget, May Give Increase Members of the Polk County Board of Commissioners will likely increase their allocation to the school budget by $25,000 when they approve the budget Monday afternoon, according to chairman Jeannie Martin. The school board, which lob bied the commissioners Mon day night for more money, has called a work session Monday evening, at which time Supt. Jim Causby said the members will discuss whether or not to accept the county's budget. If the school board votes not to accept the budget, they would then call for a joint meeting with the commission ers, but the situation is not likely to end up in court like two years ago, Causby said. "The last time was much dif ferent," he said. "Then it was actually a cut, and they had wiped out capital outlay. It is a much friendlier situation this time," Martin said she had talked one-on-one with other board members Tuesday morning and found the majority of the members favor increasing the school budget. County board members can talk individually without violating public meet ings laws. The board members were talking to each other after lis tening to just a few speakers at the county's budget public (Continued On Back Page) WEDNESDAY, JUNE 10,1992 Dr. Geoffrey Ballcam Balkam Resigns To Be Vice Principal At New High School Dr. Geoffrey Balkam resigned from the Polk County Board of Education Monday to accept the job of vice principal of the new Polk County High School. The school board will appoint someone to replace Dr. Balkam for the remainder of his 2 1/2-year term, said Sunt. James Causby. Though no defi nite plans have been made, the board members did discuss advertising for interested indi viduals from the Green Creek community to take Dr. Bal- kam's place, Causby said. "Dr. Balkam has been an applicant for some time for an administrative position," said Dr. Causby of his recommend ation to hire him. "He is a very capable person." Because Dr. Balkam did not vote on either his employment (Continued On Back Page) 32 Pages Today 2SC Per Copy Shots Fired At Tryon House From Car, Four Arrested Tryon Police are investigating a report of shots fired Monday night at the duplex home of the Gary and Miller families in Viewmont Heights. The police received a report Monday night at 6 p.m. of shots being fired from a Honda car occupied by five young men. When police .arrived, the car had left the area. Landrum and Spartanburg police were noti fied to be on the lookout. Spartanburg public safety officers found the car at Tobe Hartwell Apartments in Spar tanburg around 7 p.m. and arrested four individuals. One ran and a warrant for his arrest has been issued. Tryon Police Chief Nathan Shields said Spartanburg offi cers searching the suspects' car found one .380-calibcr auto matic pistol, two .32-caliber revolvers, one .357-caliber revolver, shotgun shells and .25-caliber automatic ammuni tion. Charged with carrying con cealed weapons were: Corne lius Fan, 21, Brad Hogue, 21, Roderick Brown, 21, James LeRoy Farr, 25, and Ricky Hull, 25, Shields said. Shields said witnesses to the shooting said they heard shot- gun and pistol shots. No bullets are believed to have hit the house, he said.
